Arctic Coliving: working through the polar night at 78 north
Arctic Coliving is a seasonal coliving in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, roughly a thousand kilometres from the North Pole and the most northerly one of its kind. It runs from October into January, which is the polar night: the sun does not rise at all for months.
What Arctic Coliving Does
- Seven rooms, one small group. Deliberately tiny, so the community is the whole house rather than a subset of it.
- A season built around the polar night. October to January, when Longyearbyen is dark around the clock and the aurora is overhead rather than on the horizon.
- Everything bundled into the weekly rate. Room, heating, coworking access, internet, airport pickup and the events programme.
- Arctic operations behind it. The coliving is run with Spitzbergen Reisen, a local expedition operator, which is how the logistics work at all this far north.
- A 14 night minimum. Getting to Svalbard is a commitment, and the operator prices for people who intend to stay.
Why It Makes Sense for Nomads
The pitch is unusual and honest: when the sun disappears, so do a lot of distractions. There is no daylight to feel guilty about wasting and very little to do outdoors alone, so the working rhythm becomes whatever you decide it is. People who have done a winter here tend to describe it as the most focused month of their year.
The setting is the other half. Longyearbyen is a former mining town of about two thousand people with polar bears outside the settlement boundary, northern lights most clear nights, and a surprisingly good restaurant scene for its size.
Go in knowing what you are choosing. Months without sunlight affect people differently, everything on Svalbard is expensive because it is shipped or flown in, and you cannot leave the settlement without a guide. This is a deliberate experience rather than a cheap base.
Pricing
From around 280 euros a week including heating, internet, coworking and airport transfer. Booking runs through a partner rather than on the site.
A month here is a story, not a saving.
