Avalon Bansko: a mountain house with hosts who live there

Avalon is a coliving in Bansko, the Bulgarian ski town that turned into one of Europe's cheapest remote-work bases. It is run by James and Dani, who come from hotels and hospitality and spend their winters on the mountain, and the place is sized to feel like a shared home rather than a small hotel.

What Avalon Does

  • Private single rooms and mini apartments. Around 550 euros a month for a single and 699 for an apartment, bills included.
  • A big shared kitchen. The centre of the house, and where most of the community actually happens.
  • A small spa and laundry on site. Unusual at this price, and genuinely useful after a day on the slopes.
  • Reported 200 Mbps internet and central heating. The two things that decide whether a Bulgarian winter is workable.
  • A one month minimum. Bansko's rhythm runs in months, and the pricing assumes you are settling in.

Why It Makes Sense for Nomads

Bansko is the value outlier of European remote work. Lift passes and living costs are a fraction of the Alps, the internet is fast and cheap, and the town has built up a permanent nomad population large enough to sustain year-round events, coworking and a well-known annual festival.

Winter is skiing and snowboarding from the door. Summer is hiking in the Pirin mountains with the crowds gone and prices lower still, which is the season most people underestimate.

The trade is that Bansko is a small town. The nomad scene is the social scene, and if it is not for you there is not much of an alternative. Avalon's own answer to that is scale: small enough to know everyone, big enough that there is someone in the kitchen.

Pricing

Single rooms from around 550 euros a month and mini apartments from around 699, both including bills. One month minimum.

One of the best value-per-euro colivings in Europe, in the town that made the case for cheap mountain winters.
