Beachbums: two houses and a beach coworking space in Madiha
Beachbums is a coliving on the beach road at Madiha, just along the coast from Weligama in southern Sri Lanka. It is split between two houses, Beachside and Palm Side, with a purpose-built coworking space on the ground floor facing the water.
What Beachbums Does
- Two houses, several budgets. Private rooms with and without air conditioning, plus a shared dorm, so the price range is wide for one operator.
- A coworking space on the beach. Built on the ground floor and open to day visitors as well as residents, which brings in people staying elsewhere.
- Surf on the doorstep. Madiha and Weligama form one of the most reliable beginner-to-intermediate surf stretches in Asia.
- A deliberately slow rhythm. The operator describes the pace as the product, and the reviews agree.
- Steps from the sand. Accommodation is on the beach road rather than a tuk-tuk ride from it.
Why It Makes Sense for Nomads
Sri Lanka's south coast is one of the cheapest good places in the world to spend a season. Food costs almost nothing, the surf is consistent from November to April, and the country is small enough that hill country and safari parks are a few hours away when you want a break.
Madiha is the quieter neighbour to Weligama, which has become crowded. Being just outside the busy stretch, with a coworking space attached, is the practical argument for this one over a guesthouse.
Two things to plan for. The south coast has a distinct season, and the monsoon months shift the surf to the other side of the island. And air conditioning is worth paying for here if you work through the afternoon.
Pricing
Not published. Rooms range from a shared dorm to air-conditioned private rooms and are quoted on request; coworking day passes are available separately.
A cheap, easy season by the water, with a desk that faces it.
