CocoVivo: off-grid cabins where the jungle meets the reef
CocoVivo is a 55 acre conservation project turned eco-retreat on Isla Cristobal, in the Bocas del Toro archipelago on Panama's Caribbean side. It is genuinely off grid and reachable by boat, with private cabins scattered across the property and a healthy reef directly offshore.
What CocoVivo Does
- Private cabins on a 55 acre property. No dorms, spread out enough that the jungle is the neighbour.
- Starlink internet. Around 40 Mbps in the cabins and over 200 Mbps at the Reef Center, which makes working here possible at all.
- A protected coral reef at the doorstep. The operator calls it the main reason to come, with free snorkel gear.
- Wildlife as a daily event. Sloths, howler monkeys, kinkajous and dolphins, plus bioluminescence you can swim in.
- A conservation project underneath it. The retreat funds the protection of the land and reef.
Why It Makes Sense for Nomads
Bocas del Toro is one of the more accessible pieces of Caribbean wilderness, and Panama uses the US dollar, has a friendly long-stay visa and is a short flight from both American continents.
The reason to choose somewhere off grid is that it is a genuinely different month. Healthy coral is increasingly rare, and living above it while working normal hours is an unusual thing to be able to do. Starlink is what makes the difference between a holiday and a working stay.
Set expectations properly. Off grid means boat transfers, limited supplies and no walking to a restaurant. Forty megabits is fine for calls but is not a fibre line, and monthly rates around 1,650 dollars are high for Panama. You are paying for the location and the isolation.

A month for people who want the reef more than they want a town.
