San Telmo is the right base for a first stay: cobbled streets, the Sunday antiques market, tango, and close enough to the centre to reach anything. Palermo is trendier and more expensive; San Telmo has more character per peso.

Two practical notes. Argentina's economy moves fast, so confirm current rates and how payment works before you arrive, since exchange arrangements have changed repeatedly. And the house skews young, which is either the appeal or a reason to look elsewhere.
