Lava Guide

Lava Guide

Categories

Lava Guide is a free travel app for Tenerife, with 24 hikes, six planned day trips and around 160 curated places picked by someone who has walked them. Maps and guides work offline once downloaded, and a built-in planner keeps an itinerary in one place. There is no subscription or paywall, on iOS or Android. It suits remote workers basing themselves in the Canary Islands who want vetted recommendations instead of search results.

Lava Guide: Tenerife, tested on foot

Tenerife is one of the busiest bases in the Canary Islands for remote workers, and most of what is written about it is either official tourism copy or the same ten viewpoints recycled across blogs. Lava Guide is a free app built by a traveller who spent years on the island, and everything in it comes from trails they actually walked and neighbourhoods they actually stayed in.

What Lava Guide Does

  • Hikes with offline maps — 24 routes for every level, from the laurel forests of Anaga to the volcanic terrain of Teide National Park, with live positioning while you are on the trail
  • Day trips planned end to end — six itineraries that sequence the stops in a sensible order instead of leaving you to work out the driving
  • City tours at your own pace — Santa Cruz, La Laguna, La Orotava and more, with context on the history and architecture in front of you
  • Around 160 curated locations — beaches, restaurants, towns and viewpoints, chosen rather than scraped
  • A trip planner — build the itinerary inside the app so nothing gets forgotten
  • Local context and a live events calendar — short visual explainers on history, nature and the island's volcanic origins, plus the festivals and concerts running while you are there

Maps and guides download for offline use, which matters on an island where the mountain roads regularly drop signal.

Why It Makes Sense for Nomads

Anyone spending a month or a season in Tenerife hits the same constraint: the working week is fixed, and weekends are the only real window to see the island. Lava Guide is built for that decision. The research is already done and the routes are already sequenced, so a free Saturday turns into a planned day trip rather than an hour of tab-hopping.

It also covers the practical side of settling in for a while: when to visit, where to stay, how to get around, and what the different towns and neighbourhoods are actually like.

Free to use, with no subscription and no paywall on either the iOS or Android app. Creating an account is optional.
