play:space: a community venue in Cluj with rooms
play:space in Cluj-Napoca is broader than a coliving: an events venue, a coworking space and coliving rooms, hosting everything from aerial silks and capoeira to gardening and self-development workshops. It was founded around eco action and community resilience.
What play:space Does
- Rooms from around 100 euros a week. Coliving alongside the workspace and venue.
- A wide events programme. Movement, crafts, gardening and personal development, open to the city.
- Coworking space. Used by local freelancers as well as residents.
- Venue hire. For workshops and gatherings, which is a significant part of the business.
- A social and environmental mission. Originally built as a home for eco action in Cluj.
Why It Makes Sense for Nomads
Cluj-Napoca is Romania's tech capital and one of central Europe's better-kept secrets: a university city with a large student population, a serious IT industry, some of the fastest internet in the world, and prices well below western Europe. Transylvania's mountains and medieval towns are close.
A hundred euros a week for a room in a community venue is very cheap for the EU, and the programme means you meet local people rather than only other travellers.
One honest caveat, and the operator is candid about it themselves: the original vision proved not to be viable, the founding team left, and the space came under new management in November 2024. Confirm what is currently running before planning a stay.
Pricing
From around 100 euros a week for a room. Coworking and venue hire priced separately.
Cheap, mission-driven and in transition, so ask what is actually open.
