The Hive Adventure

The Hive Adventure

Categories

The Hive Adventure is a permanent worldschooling and self-directed learning community in Cabrera on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. It runs everything from a one-week family taster to six-week changemaker camps, built around regenerative living and hands-on projects rather than a taught curriculum. It is one of the few established year-round hubs in the Caribbean, which makes it a rare option for families wintering in the Americas.

The Hive Adventure: a year-round worldschooling community in the Caribbean

What The Hive Adventure Does

  • A permanent community: a year-round base in Cabrera on the Dominican north coast, rather than a pop-up that vanishes after a fortnight.
  • A one-week family adventure: the deliberate taster option, designed so a family can sample the place before committing to a longer programme.
  • Six-week changemaker camps: the longer format, built around projects, environmental work and self-directed learning.
  • Regenerative framing: the programmes are organised around living and learning in a way that gives back to the place, not around covering a syllabus.
  • All ages welcome: the site is explicit that nobody is too young or too old, so it is not restricted to primary-age children the way most hubs effectively are.

Why It Makes Sense for Nomads

Almost all the established worldschooling infrastructure sits in Europe, Southeast Asia or Mexico. If your family is wintering in the Americas or working US-friendly hours, the options thin out fast. The Hive is one of the few genuine year-round communities in the Caribbean, and the time zone alone makes it workable for parents with North American clients.

The one-week taster is the right way to approach it. Committing a family to six weeks in a country you have never visited is a large bet, and a week costs little and answers most of the questions a website cannot.

The changemaker framing will suit some families and not others. If you want a school that reports grades, this is not it. If you want your children learning by building things in a place that needs them built, it is unusually well set up for that.
